Welcome all Newcomers!

Happy Mother's Day to all my precious mom readers! You are loved, cherished and very special! :-) This issue of Rexanne's Web Review is dedicated to you! Enjoy your day and especially enjoy being pampered ... for a change. Sure feels good, huh? We need it so desperately.

Guys, treat us well. We are soft and delicate even if, at times, we appear to be pillars of strength. We need to be treated with tenderness and appreciation in order to carry on our role of Mother. It's a tough one!

Don't miss this week's featured home page, "Mothers!" Awesome!

Reader's Comments:

Reader Aunti Babe had this to say about my nightly news phobia:

"I stopped watching the nightly news after Susan Smith confessed to drowning her two sons. That one found me waking in the middle of the night! I couldn't have endured more pain if they had been my grandchildren."

Amen to that, Aunti Babe! "Loving Everyone's Child Creates Magic!"

Last week to soak up a WWW Mother's Day at: Rexanne's Mother's Day ;-)

OK, here's the scoop:

Parenting & Family Link(s) of the Week:

Moms, did you ever question your value as a role model, care taker, administer of hugs and Band-Aids? I think we all have in today's climate of "do more, get more, have more." Many of us work to bring home a pay check and others work for our sanity. Have you ever wondered if your children were better off with the baby sitter than you? Scientific studies are beginning to point to the overwhelming value of a mother's love, hugs and support. Nannies, baby-sitters and relatives are terrific. They just aren't as terrific as Mom.

I have had the best of both worlds, I suspect. I worked a high-powered executive job until my older daughter was 2 and a half. At a crossroads in my career, I opted to "get pregnant and stay home for a year." HA! Little did I realize I was about to take a ten year hiatus from my much-loved life! I didn't get pregnant right away, but, after having spent a year basking in the glow of being "Mom," I couldn't bear giving up the care and nurturing of my daughter to another nanny, no matter how wonderful. I think it was the best career move of my life.

Well, ten years later, I am back in the work force and thriving. Yes, I felt bored much of the time. Yes, our family sacrificed the bigger house, fancier cars and vacations some of our peers were enjoying. But it was a conscious decision to sacrifice for the benefit of our children. We wanted OUR morals, OUR ethics and OUR life lessons to influence our children.

I think moms can work at home, be homemakers or work outside of the home and still be great moms. The most important part of mothering, I feel, is being there for our children. Maybe your sacrifice is going to work but spending your precious little free time reading your child a bedtime story every night, taking him to the park on Saturdays or chaperoning your daughter's school dance. What matters is our input, the confidence in our roles as mothers and knowing we are the best person for the role ... to understand how valuable we are to society.

Pat yourselves on the backs ... you've accomplished a miracle! There is no greater sacrifice on earth, in my opinion, than making the decision to be a parent. Know how important you are. Know that your children need you to be as solid an individual as you can be. Therein lies your strength as a mother, whether you spend all day at home or in an office. We are all exceptional women in our motherhood.

This article, from Momscape, is an excellent essay on the importance of moms: Mother Matters

Food & Cooking Site of the Week:

Grandma's Favorite Recipes

Grandma's Favorite Recipes is one food & cooking site you'll never want to live without again! Sandy has compiled a collection of her Grandma Barbre's recipes to rival Betty Crocker! From appetizers to desserts, there are so many great recipes here you'll be clicking for hours, awestruck by the amount of time, effort and love that has obviously gone into the creation of this site.

Grandma's Favorites has every holiday covered, from drinks to the very best desserts of the season. There is a conversion chart, information on high altitude cooking and a home remedy page that will bring back memories of your own Grandma! You're sure to find a favorite section of Grandma's Favorites after browsing this great site.

Grandmothers are the glue of a family, aren't they? I miss my own dear "Nonna" terribly. She was also an awesome cook. We still make her special dishes on holidays. This "Pick of the Week" is dedicated to all my wonderful Grandmother readers! We love you so! Bon Appetit!

Kid's Site of the Week:

Yaa Yaa's World

Your children will love Yaa Yaa the Clown! From her brightly painted face to her wonderfully entertaining and fun site, Yaa Yaa's love for children shines through.

Yaa Yaa (Greek for Grandmother) dreamed of having a web site for kids, a safe place where they could learn new things and enjoy games she found for them. Her dream was realized with the help of family and friends and we are the lucky benefactors!

Children will love her clown gallery, clown coloring pictures, funny kid-size jokes and a kitchen page where they can find easy-to-make recipes designed for little hands. Not to be missed is Yaa Yaa's rabbit assistant, Marshmellow's, page, complete with bunny jokes!

There are also educational pages at Yaa Yaa's. A great states page where kids can enter the name of a state and find information about it.

You could wish Yaa Yaa a Happy Mother's Day when you stop by her world by signing her guest book! I know she'll appreciate it. :-)

Tip or Trick of the Week:
"Easy Shortening Removal"

Reader MoBerry shares this super tip with us:

"When you're measuring shortening into measuring cups, try placing plastic wrap or waxed paper into the measuring cup before measuring the shortening. Then, just lift the plastic wrap or waxed paper out of the measuring cup and the shortening comes right off."

Great idea, MoBerry! I'm using this one! Thanks!

Weekly Time Waster:
"Because life is supposed to be fun!"

Phrase Finder

This site is unreal! Phrase Finder boasts one of the largest "phrase" data bases on the planet. Enter a word and they will return a list of phrases using that word plus other phrases relating to it. You can look up the origins and meanings of various phrases, find out how many phrases relate to human body parts and there's a section on misheard song lyrics that'll crack you up!

You can submit your own phrase if they don't already have it listed and generally waste hours roaming the pages of this great site. Ya know, for being around only a scant five years or so (well, to the public, anyway!), the Internet is really a remarkable place! ;-)

WARNING: This site does list risqué and otherwise offbeat phrases if they happen to apply to the word you've entered, so please don't let the little ones browse freely here. But do remember to feed them first. ;-)

Featured Home Page of the Week:

Mothers

After a few hours of trying to find the perfect home page for this week's special Mother's Day issue, I was still not "quite" satisfied with my choices. Then I received this beautifully designed page by one of our readers, Deanna. My decision to use it was immediate.

On this page, a daughter asks her mother: "Do you think I should have a baby?" The mother imagines what she would like to tell her precious daughter about motherhood ... things her daughter will never learn in childbirth classes. One of the thoughts the mother has is:

" ... the physical wounds of child bearing will heal, but becoming a mother will leave her with an emotional wound so raw that she will forever be vulnerable ... "

Oh, what a perfect description of the bittersweet feelings we have for our children! This must-read page is the perfect Mother's Day sentiment!

Thank you, Deanna!
